Agriculture in the Oderbruch

The Oderbruch, once called the vegetable garden of Berlin, is a special agricultural region. Its colonization by the Prussian crown aimed at creating an agricultural landscape. The soils are mostly fertile, but their cultivation is energy-intensive and must be ensured by continuous maintenance of the complex water system. Accordingly, farmers in the region must also meet specific challenges in order to survive.

Agriculture is exposed to three unstable systems: The environment, the market and politics. Despite a high degree of social influence, it remains a craft that must be practiced with skill, ability and diligence and, above all, with a sense of the specific location. Farmers have one leg in the global dynamics of grain exchanges, EU agricultural reforms and the constant media alarm, and the other leg in their stables, fields and village neighborhoods. In the agricultural debate, it is usually overlooked that the changes in the field of agriculture are serious. Technology, the market, laws and, last but not least, the available workforce set the pace and force farms to make constant adjustments.

Against this background the question arises, which forms of cooperation exist to jointly secure the future of agriculture in the Oderbruch.

  • How are farms networked today, in the era of global grain and meat markets - in value creation, through material cycles and division of labor?
  • Where are the regional finishing structures, how can they be improved or newly created?
  • What is the experience with direct marketing?
  • How can agriculture be strengthened as a supply for its own population?
  • What is the experience at the level of joint political debate on agricultural policy?

These questions are to be discussed in greater depth in a discussion event with the district administrator Gernot Schmidt. The event is open to the public. At the beginning, the situation will be briefly outlined in short presentations.
