Neighborhood - rural community today

Project presentation on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Coworking Oderbruch Letschin

As a cultural heritage site, the Letschiner Heimatstuben are participating in the 2025 SUSTAINABILITY theme with the project "Neighborhood - rural community today".

Edgar Petrick, the director of the Heimatstuben, describes the project as follows: "Our Oderbruch is a veritable historical and contemporary treasure trove on this subject. Already during the draining of the Oderbruch and with the arrival of the colonist families recruited from half of Europe, new challenges arose for the colonists as a result of demographic changes, as well as from the perspective of the long-established inhabitants. Skepticism towards foreign cultural influences and views, ways of thinking, languages and dialects first had to be overcome. Even over 270 years ago, it was a question of mutual acceptance, tolerance and balanced coexistence. These prerequisites took time and mutual understanding and trust in order for peaceful coexistence to develop.
This is where the term "neighborhood" comes into play, which is intended to narrow down this topic. All of them, whether we call them immigrants, newcomers or jokingly "new colonists", have one thing in common: they are moving into a new, unfamiliar living environment. This is where the project idea "Neighborhood - rural community today" in the municipality of Letschin would like to start. Newcomers and long-established residents must and can come to terms with each other. How do you meet them? How are they received? What practical experiences, expectations, successes, concerns, conflicts and problems have there been on both sides? What were the reasons for choosing our Oderbruch as the new center of life? Have the wishes and expectations been fulfilled? How do our newcomers get involved as village neighbors? What are their shared ideas for the future?

The Letschiner Heimatstuben and project partners invite you to the project presentation on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Coworking Oderbruch, Karl-Marx-Str. 5, 15324 Letschin. We are planning a forum with a representative cross-section of our people in the municipality of Letschin. This means that representatives of the younger and older generations of the community of Letschin, as "long-established residents", will enter into an exchange of ideas with our "new colonists". The community seniors' advisory council and the children's and youth advisory council of the community are included as discussion partners.
Johanna Ickert will prepare a film documentary with our newcomers to set the mood for the discussion round, which will serve as a basis for discussion. A recording of key content from the event will contribute to sustainability. The Letschiner Heimatstuben are working together with the Bockwindmühle Wilhelmsaue cultural heritage site on the planned overall implementation of the project idea. Uwe Ballhorn and Matthias Kay will support our event with musical interludes. The moderator will be Torsten Kohn from Coworking Oderbruch Letschin. Coffee and cake will be provided by the Letschiner Heimatverein."

It is sure to be an exciting, varied afternoon in Letschin on September 13.
